Is there a more annoying sound than a baby crying? I vaguely remember reading studies about this, and I would even guess that a baby's crying is specifically calibrated to be most annoying to his parents. Makes perfect sense, since all we want to do is get him to stop, which means his needs get met as soon as possible.
Right now, I think the checklist is as follows:
1) Try feeding him
2) Check his diaper
3) Hold him and sway him (and shush him)
4) Stick a finger in his mouth
5) Pray
I imagine as he gets older, this list will expand to include (among other things):
6) Buy him the latest toy or video game or other consumer product he deems necessary
7) Stay 20 feet away from him in all public places lest anyone think he had parents
8) Raise his allowance
So we're savoring the moment.
They are so smart, but uniformed in the beginning. Run through the checklist, but know that he is training you.
